Teaching Consistency and Diligence

Charlie Parker was quoted to have practiced up to 15 hours per day. As young students, stories like this are extremely daunting, intimidating, and scary. There is a relationship between length of practice and frequency of practice, and how that ultimately relates to deeper learning and progression. In my experience, students often underestimate the value of their practice frequency, and in general, practicing for 45-minutes more frequently is vastly more beneficial than practicing once in awhile for 3-hours.

Taking private lessons early in a student’s career is vital to their future as a successful student or career musician, as the skills they learn at an early age become habitual for the rest of their musical journey. It’s extremely valuable to have one-on-one, in-person (if possible), instruction to get instant feedback on common mistakes, and most importantly, role modeling of proper music making. Consistency in practice leads to success in many aspects of music, including but not limited to: winning lead chair/solo chair positions in your school’s ensembles, placing well in all-state bands and/or solo ensemble competitions, or creating successful college or graduate school auditions with potential scholarship offerings.

Some skills we can build together include developing your unique tone, strong sense of intonation, building faster and more accurate technique, proper articulation in all ranges of the instrument, including fixing slap tonguing, extending your range into the altissimo and developing control of overtones, building a coherent musical phrase, and learning healthy practice strategies.

If these are skills you would like to build, send me a message! Lessons are currently being offered in-person, dependent on location, as well as online. Please keep in mind that online lessons are only as effective as your sound equipment, unfortunately, so without decent sound equipment, we can only get so far.
